PreNatal Massage

Prenatal massage is a type that's similar to regular massage – it aims to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and just makes you feel good. But prenatal massage is also customized to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies.

Carrying a baby inside you changes your center of gravity and puts a lot of stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, meaning your pelvic joints are less stable, and it also changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward. Add to that, the extra weight you're carrying and you may end up with an aching lower back.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends prenatal massage as a good way to relax and improve circulation.

Research on the therapeutic benefits of massage for pregnant women is limited, but small studies suggest that prenatal massage may also:

Getting a pregnancy massage can also put you in a more relaxed state of mind to help you cope with all the big changes that are going on in your life.

Postpartum Massage

A postpartum massage is a full body massage that occurs within the first 12 weeks after you give birth to your baby and receiving one can benefit your mood and speed up healing.

Benefits of massage for the postpartum mom include:

  • Reduced swelling. Many mothers find that their body swells during labor. Massaging can help to redistribute water within the body and encourage the draining and circulation of excess fluids.

  • Improved milk production. For moms seeking an increase in their breast milk supply, massage can be a great way to increase circulation and the necessary hormones to make this happen, as evidenced in this 2020 studyTrusted Source.

  • Hormone regulation. The postpartum body is one of constantly fluctuating hormones. In addition to touch, many massages involve essential oils that may help elevate one’s mood and may encourage hormonal balance.

  • Reduced anxiety and depression. Many new parents experience the “baby blues” or even postpartum depression. Getting a massage can help to decrease stress contributing to these anxious and depressed feelings.

  • Better sleep. Everyone knows new parents need as much sleep as they can get! Massage can help parents relax and get their body ready for deep, restorative sleep.

You can start postpartum massage as soon as you feel ready. A 2016 studyTrusted Source found that a back massage one day after delivery significantly reduced anxiety in new mothers.  Most new moms see significant benefits when receiving massages every week for the first 3 months after delivery.

Lymphatic Massage

What is lymphatic massage?

Lymphatic massage, also called lymphatic drainage or manual lymph drainage, is a technique developed in Germany for treatment of lymphedema, an accumulation of fluid that can occur after lymph nodes are removed during surgery, most often a mastectomy for breast cancer. Lymphedema can also be present at birth or develop at puberty or during adulthood. This type, known as primary lymphedema, can affect as many as four limbs and/or other parts of the body. The cause is unknown.

What conditions is lymphatic massage used for?

Up to 25 percent of breast cancer patients whose surgery includes removal of lymph nodes in the area of the armpit eventually develop lymphedema. The condition can also occur in the legs or other parts of the body if lymph nodes are removed in the course of other types of surgery – for melanoma, colon, prostate or bladder cancer, for example – or are damaged by radiation treatment, infection or trauma. Symptoms include swelling and pain near the site of the removed or damaged lymph nodes. Lymphedema can occur immediately after radiation therapy or surgery, or weeks, months, and even years later.

  • A lymphatic massage session for women who develop lymphedema after surgery for breast cancer starts with light massage on the surface of the skin of the neck. The therapist gently rubs, strokes, taps or pushes the skin in directions that follow the structure of the lymphatic system so that accumulated lymph fluid can drain through proper channels. Lymphatic drainage is very gentle, is not painful and doesn’t have a stimulating effect. Each session lasts from 45 to 60 minutes, and therapy usually is performed once a day, four or five times a week for two to four weeks. One study showed that the greatest reduction in swelling from lymphedema occurs in the first week of treatment and stabilizes during the second week.  Our Lymphatic massages are sold in a 3 – 60 minute package or a 6 – 60 minute package.

  • The National Lymphedema Network lists four circumstances under which lymphatic massage or drainage should be avoided:

When patients who have developed lymphedema after surgery experience a sudden, marked increase in localized swelling. Under these circumstances, patients are advised to stop treatment and to see their physicians for evaluation as soon as possible.

Patients with a sudden onset of lymphangitis (an infection) should immediately discontinue treatment until the infection is treated and completely clears up. Patients who are at increased risk for blood clotting should be tested to rule out deep-venous thrombosis before being treated. During treatment, these patients should be followed closely, and testing should be performed on a regular basis.

Patients who have congestive heart failure must be monitored closely to avoid moving too much fluid too quickly, which could put a strain on the heart.

When pain is present, treatment should be discontinued until the underlying cause has been determined and the pain subsides.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a widely practiced and popular massage therapy technique in the United States. This form of bodywork aims to improve blood circulation to the heart, among other positive health perks. As part of a Swedish massage session, a therapist will use the hands, forearms and elbows to manipulate a client's muscles using long, gliding strokes. Other techniques that may also be used include kneading, tapping, applying a circular pressure and stretching.

  • Swedish massage can help alleviate many health conditions, in addition to providing totally relaxing experience. The technique can help the following:

    • Circulatory and respiratory disorders

    • Back pain

    • Tendonitis

    • Migraines and other headaches

    •Muscle spasms

    • Joint pain

    • Stress and anxiety

Swedish massage therapy uses many variations and techniques for therapeutic benefit and overall wellness.

  • Effleurage: Involves using gliding strokes from the neck to the base of the spine or from the shoulder to the fingertips. Strokes done on the limbs are directed towards the heart to improve lymphatic flow and blood circulation.

Petrissage: Uses rolling, pressing and squeezing motions on the muscles to enhance circulation. Petrissage cleanses toxins from nerve and muscle tissue through kneading and compression.

Friction: Consists of circular or transverse movements near the joints, alongside the spine and in other bony areas. Increases muscle and joint flexibility and breaks down muscle fiber knots.

Tapotement: Uses a series of percussive movements to tap or strike the muscles to invigorate and reduce muscle spasms.

Vibration or Shaking: Consists of the therapist rapidly shaking hands on the limbs or back to boost circulation; often utilized for the treatment of low back pain.

Reflexology Massage Therapy

Reflexology is an ancient therapy that focuses on healing the body by applying pressure to reflex points found in the hands and feet, which helps the body to restore its balance naturally. Pressing on the different points in the hands and feet promotes healing in corresponding parts of the body. Unlike other foot massages that intend to mostly relieve tension in the feet themselves, reflexology is a far more in-depth science that aims to harmonize your entire body. Reflexology treatments have been found to be highly effective for conditions such as anxiety, stress, digestive disorders, kidney issues, diabetes, chronic headaches, plantar fasciitis, allergies, and depression.

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy

This manual soft tissue therapy technique is highly-specialized and designed to correct pain and movement dysfunction by treating trigger points, muscle adhesions, and connective tissue patterns. NMT treatments involve applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes, focused localized pressure and intentional friction to target the inner layers of the muscles and connective tissues and bring relief to areas of tension. This is a process of making space for the muscles to fully relax, so that the lower layer of connective tissue can be accessed, trigger points can be neutralized, scar tissue can be broken up and muscle tightness reduced. The art of massage therapy targets deep tension from overworked muscles and stressed fascia (connective tissue) to alleviate chronic joint and muscle pain. It also promotes faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation. In addition to benefiting muscle and tissue health, massage therapy modalities also positively affect your overall health by decreasing blood pressure, stimulating the lymphatic system, reducing stress hormones, and improving lung function. NMT is often more medical in nature and is considered an ongoing treatment – not just something a person does whenever they feel a bit achy, but based on more of a wellness plan.
